Remco Evenepoel (born January 25, 2000 in Schepdaal ) is a Belgian cyclist .

Athletic career

Remco Evenepoel comes from a cycling family; his father Patrick Evenepoel was also active as a cyclist. The son began his sporting career at the age of five as a football player and competed for the youth teams of RSC Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven as well as in national teams of different age categories. Most recently he played for KV Mechelen until he switched to cycling in 2017. In autumn of that year he won his first junior races, and in total he achieved 34 victories in 44 races over the next 18 months.

In August 2018, Remco Evenepoel, who had already won both national road titles , became two-time Junior European Champion in Glasgow , winning the road race with a margin of 9:44 minutes. Only a few weeks later he also won individual time trials and junior road races at the World Road Championships in Innsbruck . He then received a contract with Deceuninck-Quick-Step . Because of his success, the Belgian press named him after Eddy Merckx Kannibaal van Schepdaal , but Evenepoel emphasized that he did not want to be called "the next Merckx".

In January 2019 Evenepoel started for his team for the first time at the Vuelta a San Juan Internacional . In the individual time trial of the third stage of the Tour of Argentina , he finished third and was ninth in the overall ranking and winner of the junior ranking. After Evenepoel had won the overall ranking of the Tour of Belgium , a stage race hors categorie , in June 2019 , he won his first start in a UCI WorldTour race , the Clásica San Sebastián, in August . In the penultimate climb he temporarily fell back from the top group, but was able to follow an attack by Toms Skujiņš 20 kilometers before the finish , which he distanced on the last climb and reached the finish with 38 seconds ahead of the closest pursuers.

In August 2019, Remco Evenepoel became European champion in the individual time trial in Alkmaar, the Netherlands , after winning both road titles in the junior class the year before. At the following world championships , he finished second in the individual time trial. He started the 2020 season by winning two tours: In February he won the Vuelta a San Juan Internacional and the Algarve Tour . Subsequently, other races were canceled indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic . After the resumption of the racing calendar in August 2020, he won the first two tours in which he participated, the Vuelta a Burgos and the Tour de Pologne . A few days later, Evenepoel fell when the Lombardy Tour was being held when he fell over a bridge wall. He suffered a fractured pelvis .
