The KV Mechelen is a Belgian football club from the city of Mechelen . The association was founded in 1904 and is colored yellow and red.

history

The club has been Belgian champion four times and had its greatest successes in the late 1980s with financial support from John Cordier . Aad de Mos was the coach at this time . The highlight was winning the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1988 . The final in Strasbourg was won 1-0 against Ajax Amsterdam . The best known players in this success were Michel Preud'homme , Graeme Rutjes , Erwin Koeman , Marc Emmers and Lei Clijsters .

In 2002 KV Mechelen got serious financial problems. A collection campaign by Mark Uytterhoeven , Piet den Boer and Fi Van Hoof prevented it from being deleted from the register of associations . Nevertheless, the club rose to the third division. In the 2004/05 season, the team was there champions and rose to the second division. In the 2006/07 season, KV Mechelen finished 2nd in the second division and returned to the first division in the promotion round.

At the end of January 2018, KV Mechelen was last in the table in the 2017/18 season . The Dutchman Dennis van Wijk was signed as the new coach . At the end of the main round, the club finished last due to a goal difference that was one goal worse and therefore relegated to the second division.

In this Mechelen had in the following year on August 20, 2018 after three games, only two points to start the season. By mutual agreement, the club separated from van Wijk as a coach and signed Wouter Vrancken as the new coach. This received a two-year contract. Under his leadership, the team took first place in the first installment and thus took part in the promotion games. This she won against the first of the second installment, KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk , so that the direct rise was successful. At the same time, the club was able to win the Belgian football cup this season . The club then extended the contract with Vrancken for an indefinite period.

The club plays its home games in the AFAS Stadium , which has a seating capacity of 17,500.

Promotion 2019

On June 1, 2019, the Appeals Committee of the Belgian Football Union decided to revoke Mechelen promotion to the First Division due to the manipulation of the game KV Mechelen against Waasland-Beveren on March 11, 2018 in the 2017/18 season of the First Division . Mechelen will remain in Division 1B in the 2019/20 season and will receive six points from each tranche. In addition, Mechelen is not allowed to participate in the Europa League and is also excluded from participation in the Belgian Football Cup in the 2019/20 season . Four responsible persons of the club were banned from all activities in the area of the Belgian Football Union for ten or seven years. Instead of Mechelen, the loser of the promotion games, KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk , is promoted to the First Division.

On June 6, 2019, the club appealed against this decision to the Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport. The judgment cannot be enforced until its decision. On July 10, 2019, the arbitral tribunal ruled that disqualification from promotion was not an acceptable sanction. Mechelen will therefore play in the first division in the 2019/20 season. The arbitral tribunal has not yet commented on the other sanctions.

Even before this preliminary ruling by the arbitral tribunal was available, Olivier Somers, one of the two main shareholders and sporting director Stefaan Vanroy, decided on July 1, 2019 to resign from all offices at KV Mechelen.

After UEFA decided on July 16, 2019 to provisionally admit KV Mechelen to the group stage of the Europa League , the Belgian arbitration tribunal gave its verdict on July 17, 2019. When you move up to division 1 A remains without any point deduction. However, Mechelen is excluded from the Belgian Cup and the Europa League in the 2019/20 season .
