Stéphane Auguste Demol (born March 11, 1966 in Watermael-Boitsfort ) is a former Belgian football player and current coach .
Career as a player
Stéphane Demol came to RSC Anderlecht at the age of 14 , where he began his professional career in 1984. In his first full season at Anderlecht, the defender scored four goals in 17 games in 1985/86 and was appointed to the Belgian national team for the first time by coach Guy Thys before the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . At the 1986 World Cup he played all seven of the Belgians' games and scored in the legendary round of 16 against the favored Soviet Union in the 102nd minute of the game , making it 3-2 for Belgium. That goal was his only one in his entire national team career. Played 38 times for Belgium in total.
In 1988 Demol moved from Anderlecht to the Italian Serie A for FC Bologna . However, his breakthrough did not succeed here and so he moved to the Portuguese club FC Porto just a year later . In the 1989/90 season he had a significant share with 31 games and 11 goals in winning the Portuguese championship. National coach Guy Thys nominated him again for the Belgian squad at the 1990 World Cup in Italy at the end of this season . After the World Cup, he moved to France for Toulouse FC , and a year later returned to Standard Liège in Belgium . When he moved to Cercle Bruges in 1993 , his star began to decline. In the following years he only came to a few missions in his clubs. He tried his hand at new clubs abroad every year: Sporting Braga , Panionios Athens , FC Lugano and Sporting Toulon in the French second division. He ended his active career in 1999 at the lower class Belgian club KFC Verbroedering Dender EH
Career as a coach
In 1999 he started his career as a coach. First he was player-coach at the Belgian amateur club SK Halle . From 2000 to 2003 he was the main coach for one season each for the Belgian clubs KV Turnhout , KFC Verbroedering Geel and KV Mechelen . In 2004 he tried his hand at coaching abroad for the first time and took over the Greek club Egaleo AO Athens . After a short time as an assistant coach at Standard Liège, the new Belgian national coach and his former national team teammate René Vandereycken made him his assistant coach in 2006 . Demol stayed with the Belgian association in this role until 2008. In 2008 he took over Ethnikos Achnas in Cyprus as coach and briefly coached the Belgian club Sporting Charleroi in 2009 . From the 2010/11 season he was coach of the Greek second division club PAS Ioannina , which he coached until 2011 before briefly overseeing FC Brussels in 2012 . In December of the same year he moved to Thailand to join the BEC-Tero Sasana , which he held until the end of March 2013. In July 2014 he took over the Saudi Arabian first division club al-Faisaly FC for one season and league rivals Hajer FC al-Hasa in the next season . Demol has been without a new club since 2016.
