Ruud Krol (born March 24, 1949 in Amsterdam ; actually Rudolf Jozef Krol ) is a Dutch football coach and former football player of Polish descent.

Player career

Ruud Krol was one of the best defenders in the world in the 1970s. At first he played in the left-back position, but later moved into the center of the defense. Krol's career began in 1968 at Ajax Amsterdam . In the second year he replaced the emigrated Theo van Duivenbode and became a regular player. In twelve years at Ajax, he and the team won six Dutch championships, four times the KNVB Cup , three times the European Cup , twice the European Supercup and once the World Cup . In 1980 Krol turned his back on the Netherlands and moved to Canada to the Vancouver Whitecaps . After just one season the defensive players returned to Europe and played from now on for Napoli in Serie A . During this time it was not enough for a title. The third station abroad was AS Cannes in 1984 . With the French, Krol ended his active career after two seasons.

National team

Krol had been a member of the Dutch national team since 1969 . His greatest successes were the vice world championships at the 1974 World Cup in Germany and at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . He took part in all the games in the Netherlands at both World Cups, making him and Wim Jansen the record-breaking Dutch World Cup player with 14 games until 2014 and was then surpassed by Wesley Sneijder . He also took part in the European Championships twice (1976 and 1980). After the resignation of Rob Rensenbrink in the national team in 1978, he became the captain of the national team.

Krol played a total of 83 international matches and scored four goals. From 1979 to 2000 he was the record player for his country.

Coaching career

In 1986 Krol ended his active career and became a coach. In 1989 his first coaching station was KV Mechelen in Belgium . After only one season he moved to Servette Geneva in Switzerland . He was only active there for a year before leaving in 1991. After a three-year break, Krol took over the Egyptian club Az-Zamalik , which he coached for the next five years. There he celebrated his first successes as a coach and led the team to win the CAF Champions League in 1996 . From 1995 to 1996 Krol was in the coaching staff of the Egyptian national soccer team and supervised them at the 1996 African Cup . After a long time in Egypt, Krol was assistant coach of the Netherlands between 1999 and 2002 and then became assistant coach at Ajax Amsterdam . In 2006 he went to France, where he was hired by the French club AC Ajaccio . After a year he went back to Az-Zamalik. This time they parted ways faster and in 2008 the former Dutch international went to South Africa to train with the Orlando Pirates .
