In the first group game, the Dutch faced Greece. After a penalty from Kist in the 65th minute, the game was decided and the team was able to achieve their first success. In the second group game you had to play against Germany. After a hat trick by Klaus Allofs within 65 minutes, Rep and Willy van de Kerkhof were only able to shorten the game to 2: 3 towards the end of the game, and they lost the game. In the last game it was decided who should qualify as second in the group for the small final. After a goal by Zdeněk Nehoda in the 16th minute, Kist scored the equalizer in the 59th minute. Netherlands needed a win, but couldn't score another goal, so they were eliminated in the group stage as third.
