Ernestus "Ernie" Wilhelmus Johannes Brandts (born February 3, 1956 in Didam ) is a Dutch football coach and former national player .

Club career

Brandts, son of the local baker, played as a teenager in his home village of Nieuw-Dijk for the club VV Sprinkhanen ("grasshoppers"). He was discovered there at the age of 17 - according to various statements either by Guus Hiddink or by Piet de Visser , then a scout at De Graafschap . Brandts joined the first division club, initially played in his youth and began his professional career here in 1974. He stayed in Doetinchem for three first division years , and when de Graafschap had to relegate in 1977, he was already so established that he received offers from various first division clubs. Feyenoord , Twente and Go Ahead Deventer were left behind when he signed a contract with PSV Eindhoven .

At PSV he was able to gain a regular place immediately. In his first season in Eindhoven he made all 34 league games and made a significant contribution to the PSV championship. He later said of his debut in Eindhoven: “PSV needed [in front of goalkeeper Jan van Beveren ] someone who could head the balls away. I was that type of guy; tall, with a good header and someone who could take out an opponent. ”He was also an integral part of his team in the UEFA Cup competition . With two goals in the 4-2 win in the quarter-final second leg against 1. FC Magdeburg , he played a major role in PSV winning the title after the successful final against SEC Bastia . In the meantime his career in the national team had also begun.

After three successful years injuries set him back; 1983/84 he played another very good season, but soon he had to surrender again injuries. He himself saw the reason in his ambition - “I should have taken breaks more often,” he says; often it came back too quickly and thus provoked new injuries. In 1986 he was champion again with PSV; but a persistent injury to the Achilles tendon prevented further seasons at the top level. The following season he moved to Roda JC after nine years in Eindhoven and two years later to MVV Maastricht , which he helped prevent relegation from the Eredivisie . In 1989 he turned his back on his native Netherlands and moved to Germinal Ekeren in Belgium . After two seasons in the First Division , Brandts came back to De Graafschap in 1991, where he finally ended his career in early 1992 due to a worn hip joint.

National team

Brandt's good performances at PSV Eindhoven also made bond coach Jan Zwartkruis aware of him. On October 5, 1977, Brandts made his national team debut in a friendly game . In the 63rd minute he was substituted on for Ruud Krol in De Kuip against the Soviet Union . Zwartkruis' successor Ernst Happel appointed him six months later to the squad for the World Cup in Argentina . Brandts benefited here from the fact that Wim Rijsbergen was injured and Wim Suurbier did not find his normal form in the defeat against Scotland . Brandts got his chance in the opening game of the second group stage . And he used it: in his second international match in Córdoba, with his first international goal, he initiated the 5-1 win against the team from Happel's home country Austria . Happel left Brandts in formation; and he caused a curiosity a few days later in the last group game against Italy : he gave the Italians the lead with an own goal in the 19th minute; shortly after half-time, however, he made up for his faux pas and equalized with a long shot. After the Netherlands had won 2-1, he also played 120 minutes in the final against Argentina and was runner-up in the world championship.

Two years later, Brandts took part in the European Championship in Italy . The Netherlands were eliminated in the preliminary round as third in the group. In total he played 28 times for the oranje elftal , scoring five goals. His last use was in September 1985 in a match against Bulgaria in Heerenveen . Coach Leo Beenhakker replaced him in the 1-0 win against Huub Stevens at halftime .

Coaching career

Brandts started at PSV in 1993 as an assistant coach. Here he worked with the coaches Dick Advocaat , Aad de Mos , Bobby Robson and Eric Gerets . After differences with Gerets, with whom he had already played one season at PSV, he left the club and worked for a short time as a businessman in Spain. On his return to the Netherlands, Brandts started as a coach at an amateur club in Nuenen . In 2005, Wim Jonk brought him in charge of the second division club FC Volendam , with whom he reached the playoffs for promotion to the honor division. Only in the semi-finals was Volendam stopped by the NAC Breda - the club to which Brandts then moved. His coaching contract with the honorary division expired in the summer of 2008 and was not renewed, although he brought the team to the cup semi-finals and third place in the championship round .

In July 2009 he became the coach of the Iranian club Rah Ahan . However, he was released in December; At the time, his Tehran team was in 16th and third-last place in the Iranian Pro League . From summer 2010 he coached the top Rwandan club APR FC from Kigali , which he led to the championship in 2011 and 2012. He then coached the first division team Yanga in neighboring Tanzania , with whom he was also able to celebrate the championship in 2013. He was sacked in January 2014 after 50 games, of which the team lost only eight, although Yanga was in first place in the table at that time. The reason was that the team lost 3-0 in a friendly against Yanga's arch-rivals Simba SC . For the 2014/15 season, Brandts took over the position of coach at the newly promoted Eredivisie, FC Dordrecht , but was dismissed in February 2015; his team was at the bottom of the table at the time.
