MVV Maastricht (full name: Maatschappelijke Voetbal Vereniging Maastricht ; up to the 2010/11 season Maastrichtse Voetbal Vereniging ; MVV for short ) is a football club from the city of Maastricht in the province of Limburg in the Netherlands and was founded on April 2, 1902 . The first team is currently playing in the second-rate Dutch Eerste Divisie . The home games are played in the De Geusselt stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators.
history
On April 2, 1902, the first Maastricht football club was founded under the name MVC (Maastricht Voetbal Club). After several renaming, the club was officially called MVV (Maastrichtse Voetbal Vereniging) for more than a hundred years from 1908 . When the honor division was founded in 1956 , the MVV was able to qualify for participation as a founding member. The Maastrichters achieved their best placings in the first two seasons with 4th and 5th place. Subsequently, the MVV hardly appeared in the upper third of the table and at the end of the season did not get beyond places, at best in the midfield. The outstanding player of the 1960s and 70s was Willy Brokamp . The striker was considered one of the best of his time and scored 139 goals in twelve seasons for Maastricht. Two years after moving to Ajax Amsterdam , the club rose to the second division for the first time in 1976 . Two years later, he was promoted back to the honor division. The ups and downs of the Maastricht Club continued in this rhythm over the years: relegation in 1982, promotion in 1984, next relegation in 1986 and renewed promotion in 1988. Then the MVV was able to stay in the first division until 1995. Well-known players of this time were z. B. Erik Meijer and Eric Gerets . Under coach Sef Vergoossen , the team was voted "Team of the Year" in 1992 because of its attractive offensive football. After relegation in 1995, it took MVV two years to return to the first division. In 2000 Maastricht was relegated again and celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 2, 2002 as a second division team. A return to the Eredivisie has not been successful so far (as of the 2012/13 season) .
Fans
The supporters of the MVV are very hot-blooded in the Netherlands. In the 1980s and 90s, the angel-side ultra fan group became significant. Its name is taken from the stadium's fan block of the same name, which is named after the Archangel Gabriel , who adorns the Maastricht coat of arms and, derived from this, that of the club. You could be found at every MVV game and were known for creating unrest at every opportunity. Due to the stricter Dutch legislation regarding hooligans in stadiums and the poor performance of the team, the fan group is now considered tamed. Due to the sporting failures, the club was also financially bad. In 2003, the municipal loan was therefore discussed in Maastricht City Hall. Mayor Leers wanted to end the financial support for the football club, which would have resulted in the bankruptcy of the MVV. Numerous club supporters then gathered around the town hall, threw bottles and stones and sometimes tried to penetrate the building.
