Dirk "Dick" Jacobus Willem Nanninga (born January 17, 1949 in Groningen , † July 21, 2015 in Maaseik ) was a Dutch football player . He made his most famous appearance in the final of the 1978 World Cup , when he scored the goal for the ultimately defeated Dutch national football team. The player from Roda JC and MVV Maastricht played 15 times for Elftal and scored six goals.
Career
Nanninga began his career with the amateur club Oosterparkers . His first professional engagement was at BV Veendam . After a year he went to Roda JC in Kerkrade where he spent eight years. After an interlude in Hong Kong at Seiko Hong Kong , he returned to the Netherlands for the 1983/84 season and played at MVV Maastricht until the end of his career in 1986.
The strong header Nanninga made his debut in the national team in the friendly against Tunisia in preparation for the 1978 World Cup , in which he scored two goals. At the World Cup he was expelled from the game against the German team for insulting the referee. In the final against hosts Argentina, he equalized the 1-0 through Mario Kempes in the 82nd minute . Nanninga, who only came on for Johnny Rep in the 59th minute , forced the Argentines into extra time. At the European Championship in 1980 he was again in the Elftal squad, which, however, was eliminated in the first round.
In July 2012, Nanninga underwent an operation in Genk in which his left lower leg was amputated as a result of diabetes and which left him in an artificial coma for five months . In 2014 his right lower leg was also amputated. In July 2015, Nanninga died at the age of 66 in a hospital in Maaseik, Belgium.
