geography
Geographical location
The city is located on the Maas about 30 km north of Maastricht , about 25 km west of Heinsberg and south of the Maasplassen . It belongs to the Euregio Meuse-Rhine .
history
In 1244 Maaseik had received city rights. In 1684 there was a great fire disaster in the city.
The Meuse has not been navigable at Maaseik since 1822. It is still navigable north of Maaseik, near the municipal boundary to Ophoven (Kinrooi). In the past, however, until the 19th century, the Meuse was navigable up to the level of the center of Maaseik. Maaseik had a Maas port, the pier can still be seen. This was possible because no water was drained for the canals and because of the reduced depth of the ships. Today Maaseik has a marina. Marina Herren Laak is located in the village of Aldeneik, in a former gravel pit that is connected to the Meuse.
