Location and economy

The city is located in the Kempen region on the “ coal plateau ”. In the 19th century, the Kamp van Beverlo military training area was set up to the northeast . From 1901 to 1989, hard coal was mined in large mines in this region and also in Beringen. Neighboring municipality is u. a. Heusden-Zolder . The city is located 18 km northwest of Hasselt on the Antwerp - Hasselt (Belgium) - Liège motorway . After the coal mine was closed, other, smaller, industrial and commercial enterprises were brought in; around a third of the working population now works in industry, a little more than half in the commercial and service sectors.

history

A settlement of a certain Bero was attested as early as 1120. In the Middle Ages, the city of Beringen soon belonged to County Loon (capital Borgloon ), and then to the Principality of Liège . In 1239, Beringen was granted city rights based on the Liège model. In the 19th century, the city's walls, towers and gates were razed. The coal mining turned it into an industrial city. The Flemish Mining Museum, an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH), tells the mining history of the city.
