As is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 8202 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It consists of the main town and the district Niel-bij-As
Hasselt is 18 kilometers to the southwest, Maastricht 18 kilometers to the southeast, Aachen 44 kilometers to the southeast, Eindhoven 48 kilometers to the north and Brussels about 85 kilometers to the west-southwest.
history
In the Belgian province of Limburg , hard coal was first discovered in As on August 2, 1901, at a depth of 541 meters. The drilling was carried out on behalf of the geologist André Dumont by the Erkelenzer Internationale Bohrgesellschaft des Anton Raky . Today a stone monument in the André Dumontlaan , in the shape of a derrick, commemorates this important event.
During the First World War , the Germans ran a mine throwing school in As. In several biographies of former German officers it is indicated that they were assigned to a course at the Asch mine throwing school near Genk .
