Herstappe ( Limburgish : Herstap ) is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region, right on the border with Wallonia . With 83 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019), it is the smallest independent municipality in Belgium. Incorporation to Tongeren as part of the 1977 regional reform was not politically feasible because Herstappe is a community with facilities .

Tongeren is six kilometers northeast, Liège 14 kilometers southeast and Brussels about 75 kilometers west.

The next motorway exits are in the south at Crisnée on the A3 / E 40 and in the east at Tongeren on the A13 / E 313 .

The nearest regional train stations are in Tongern, Waremme and Sint-Truiden , and national express trains also stop in Liège.

The airport of Liege and Maastricht Aachen Airport are the next regional airports and the Brussels National Airport near the capital Brussels is an international airport.
