Houthalen-Helchteren ( Limburg : Hôtele-Helichtre ) is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 30,655 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It consists of the two old communities of Helchteren and Houthalen , which merged in 1977.

The larger district of Houthalen was a rural community until shortly before the Second World War. In 1938 a mine (Steenkoolmijn van Houthalen) was built, which, as the population grew, also led to the construction of the Oude Cité settlement and the Meulenberg district by the mine operator. Other districts of Houthalen are Houthalen-Ost, Laak and Lillo.

Helchteren is located north of Houthalen on the N74, and also brings the district of Sonnis into the community.

Hasselt is 12 km south, the Dutch city of Maastricht 28 km south-east and Brussels about 72 km south-west.

The next motorway exit from / Houthalen - Zonhoven is immediately south of the municipality. In Heusden-Zolder , Genk are the next and Hasselt regional stations .
