history

The first socialist party in Belgium was the "Flemish Socialist Workers Party" ( Vlaamsche Socialistische Arbeidspartij (VSP)), which in 1885 was absorbed into the all- Belgian Belgian Workers' Party .

In 1978, 101 years after the founding of the VSP, the Flemish ( Socialist Partij, SP) and French-speaking Walloon socialists ( Parti Socialiste , PS) again went their own way. Karel Van Miert became the first chairman .

The Socialist Partij (SP) was a junior partner of the CD&V for a very long time . During this time there was a bribery affair that cost the then NATO Secretary General Willy Claes from the Socialist Party his office.

Under the party chairman Steve Stevaert (2003-2005) a renewal of the party took place, which was now called sp.a. The sp.a worked closely with the left-wing liberal Sociaal-Liberale Partij . This cartel existed from 2003 to 2008.

After Steve Stevaert became governor of the province of Limburg on June 1, 2005, Caroline Gennez took over the party chairmanship until a new chairman was elected (in October 2005). When the left-wing liberal Bert Anciaux joined the party in January 2009 , the party announced the change of its name to Socialisten en Progressieven Anders . The dissatisfaction in the party led to the fact that the old name was retained and the subtitle Sociaal Progressief Alternatief was added.

In the Flemish elections in 2009, the sp.a received 15.3 percent of the vote. It entered a government with Christian Democrats and Flemish Nationals and provided three ministers.
