Kinima Sosialdimokraton

Kinima Sosialdimokraton ( Greek Κίνημα Σοσιαλδημοκρατών , German: Movement of the Social Democrats ) is a social democratic party in the Republic of Cyprus with its seat in Nicosia . The abbreviation of the party is EDEK , after the original party name in Greek Ενιαία Δημοκρατική Ένωση Κέντρου (German: United Democratic Union of the Center). EDEK was founded by Vasos Lyssaridis in 1970 and is currently run by Yannakis Omirou . The party is a member of the European Social Democratic Party .

In the 2001 elections EDEK won 6.5 percent of the vote and 4 seats in the House of Representatives , in the elections on May 21, 2006 it came to 8.9 percent and 5 seats. In the 2008 presidential elections, the party supported the communist candidate Dimitris Christofias from the Progressive Party of the Working People .
