The Party of Socialists and Democrats ( it. Partito dei Socialisti e dei Democratici , PSD for short) is a social democratic political party in San Marino . It is a member of the Socialist International , its current Italian counterpart is the Democratic Party .

history

The PSD was founded in 2005 through a merger of the Partito Socialista Sammarinese (PSS), the country's oldest political party, and the Partito dei Democratici (PD). At the time of the party's inception, the party held 27 out of 60 seats in the Consiglio Grande e Generale , which was reduced to 20 seats after the 2006 general election. The PSS ruled for a long time as a junior partner in a coalition with the Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese , while the PD had its origins in the Partito Comunista Sammarinese .

The merger of the two parties provoked the exit of the middle wing of the PSS, which created the Nuovo Partito Socialista , and the exit of the socialist wing of the PD, which founded the Partito della Sinistra - Zona Franca and joined the Rifondazione Comunista Sammarinese , in formation the Sinistra Unita , while two other spin-offs, led by Fabio Berardi and Nadia Ottaviani , both members of the Consiglio Grande e Generale , who complained that the PSD was too left-wing, split in September 2008 to form the Arengo e Libertà party . Another split in 2009 in Borgo Maggiore formed the Partito Socialista Riformista Sammarinese .

In the 2006 parliamentary elections, the PSD won 31.8% of the vote and 20 out of 60 seats and ruled from 2006 to 2008 in a coalition with the Alleanza Popolare dei Democratici Sammarinesi per la Repubblica and the Sinistra Unita, until tensions between the latter two collapsed led the coalition.

In the 2008 San Marino parliamentary elections , the PSD allowed the smaller Sammarinesi per la Libertà party to run as part of their electoral list, and was part of the Riforme e Libertà coalition, which held 25 of 60 seats in the Consiglio Grande e Generale and 45.78 % of the vote won but missed a government majority.

In the San Marino parliamentary elections in 2012 , the PSD ran as part of the San Marino Bene Comune coalition, which, led by the Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese, won the election. The PSD received 14.32% of the vote and 10 seats. The PSD provided 3 ministers in the new government .

In the San Marino parliamentary elections in 2016 , the PSD formed the electoral alliance San Marino prima di tutto together with the Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese (PDCS), Sammarinesi and the Partito Socialista (PS), which in the runoff election on December 4th of the coalition adesso.sm was subject. The PSD received 7.17% of the vote and 3 seats.
