Ameca is a municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the Valles region . In addition to the city of Ameca , which is the largest place in the municipality and its administrative seat, several dozen smaller places are part of the administrative district . The word Ameca comes from “Amecatl” in the Nahuatl language . It means "water cord" and refers to the Río Ameca that flows through the valley. Ameca is currently the venue for regional events for the state of Jalisco.

Geographical location
The municipality of Ameca is located in the central-west part of the state of Jalisco, approximately 83 km from Guadalajara. The coordinates are 20º25 'to 20º42' north latitude and between 103º53'15 ″ and 104º17'30 ″ west longitude. The municipality has an extension of 841.5 km² and a population of 56,681 people in 2000. According to the INEGI census in 2010 , the population is 57,340.
The municipality of Ameca borders the municipalities of San Marcos , Etzatlán , Ahualulco de Mercado , Atengo , Tecolotlán , Teuchitlán , San Martín Hidalgo and Guachinango as well as the state of Nayarit .
The largest elevations of Ameca are the hills La Tetilla and Cuauhtépetl (Cerro del Águila) , which occupy a substantial part of the north of the municipality. In addition, there is an irregular structure due to successive valleys and extensive ranges of hills in almost all areas of the municipality.
The water supply comes mainly from the Río Ameca, which is fed in the north by the streams El Cajón, Los Llanitos, La Barranca, La Arena, El Carrizo, Las Bolas and others. In the south there are the sources El Magistral, Arroyo Grande, El Zoquite, El Palmarejo, El Alamo y Las Canoas and other smaller tributaries. There are dams in San Ignacio, de la Vega, Los Pocitos and Texcalame to ensure the supply.

geology
The subsoil consists of volcanic rock, acidic and basaltic; calcareous rocks are also found in some areas. Various minerals occur in the municipality, including gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, barite, granite and diamond.
climate
The climate in Ameca is semi-arid, dry in autumn and winter. There is no clearly marked winter; temperatures are high or very high all year round. The annual average temperature is 21.3 ° C, with an average rainfall of 864 mm, the rainy season extends from June to September. Winds come mainly from the northeast and the average temperature is 10.9 days a year.

The soil consists of vertisol connected to Regosolen , Foezem and planosol . The soil is good for agriculture and forage grass. Most of the land is cultivated ejidal .
vegetation
Most of the vegetation consists of holm oak , pine , mesquite, liquorice , legumes , eucalyptus and fruit trees. There are 9,862 hectares of forest in the municipality.

The fauna is home to wild boars, pumas, wild cats, badgers , squirrels, coyotes, hares, various birds, and reptiles.

Media and communication
For communication, the district offers post, telephone, internet via telephone and cable, voice and mobile radio, fax, radio and television signal.
Local radio stations include: XEED Radio Ameca 900 AM La Líder, RADIO CUValles (part of the network of radio stations of the University of Guadalajara ) XHUGA 105.5 FM.
The company Telecable also offers a pay-TV service, which broadcasts the independent programs “Our People” and “Our Region Ameca”, which are produced by local producers.
Public facilities
There are many organizations in Ameca, including the Red Cross, Club Rotario , Club de Leones , civil protection and the elderly.
The district offers residents electric power, parks and gardens, recreation centers, water, sewage, markets, utility center, cemetery, court, flea market, storage rooms, public safety and sporting sports centers.
In terms of public supply, 94.4% of the population have running water. The sewer system has a coverage of 86.4%, 98.1% of the residents have electrical energy.
health care
Health care in the district is primarily provided by the public health care system (Seguro Popular), which is maintained by the state health department. The Ameca branch is the 9th branch of the state of Jalisco. There is also a Social Insurance Clinic (Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social - IMSS), the Institute for the Safety and Public Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE) and special army clinics (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional - SEDENA). Ameca also has an AIDS prevention counseling center.
education
In the urban area there are a large number of different private and public schools, including the 1st Federal Secondary School, José María Luis Mora 50, the Secondary School Patria, the Juana de Arco School and the School Niños Heroes, the El CETis 63 , the CECATI 180, the Ameca regional pre-school and the CUValles ( University Center of Valles ). The last two belong to the University of Guadalajara.
Ameca is one of those districts within Jalisco and the Valles region that invest heavily in education.
traffic
The main roads are Ameca – Guadalajara, which has four lanes, Ameca – Puerto Vallarta and Ahualulco – Ameca – San Martín. In addition, the network of unpaved roads is important, which connects the smaller communities and hamlets with the district capital.
There is also a rail link for freight traffic between Ameca and Guadalajara, which has not been in operation for a long time.
For extra-urban connections there are both direct buses and buses with intermediate stops. One moves within the city on foot, with rental or private cars.
Living
Most of the living space is privately owned, most houses are connected to water and electricity and in a few cases with drainage.
The construction is based on thin walls, bricks and air bricks in the walls, vaults or small ceramic roof tiles for the roofs.
According to the second census in 2005, the district has a total of 13,664 residential units, of which 13,227 are privately owned.
