Quitupan is a municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the Sureste region . The municipality had 8,691 inhabitants at the 2010 census; the area of ​​the municipality is 676.3 km².

The largest place in the municipality and administrative seat is the Quitupan of the same name . Another place with at least 1000 inhabitants exists with Lázaro Cárdenas . The municipality comprises a total of 122 localities.

The municipality of Quitupan borders the municipalities Valle de Juárez and Santa María del Oro and the municipalities Marcos Castellanos , Jiquilpan and Cotija in the state of Michoacán .

The municipality is at an altitude of 1550  m to 2100  m and is part of the Sierra de Mazamitla . About 75% of the community area is forested.
