San Gabriel is a municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the Región Sur . The municipality had 15,310 inhabitants at the 2010 census; the area of the municipality is 748.3 km². Between 1934 and 1993 the name of the municipality was Venustiano Carranza .
The largest place in the municipality and administrative seat is the eponymous San Gabriel (1934-1993 also called Venustiano Carranza ). Other places with at least 1000 inhabitants are Jiquilpan , Alista , El Jazmín and Las Primaveras . The municipality comprises a total of 63 localities.
The municipality of San Gabriel borders on the municipalities of Tonaya , Tapalpa , Sayula , Zapotlán el Grande , Tuxpan , Zapotitlán de Vadillo , Tolimán and Tuxcacuesco .
Due to its location on the edge of the Sierra Volcánica Transversal, the municipality has a rather inconsistent orography . The highest point of the municipality is at 3700 m . A good half of the community area is forested, around 30% is used for agriculture.
