Tequila is a municipality in the Mexican state of Jalisco in the Región Valles . The municipality had 40,697 inhabitants at the 2010 census; the area of the municipality is 1,697.7 km².
Tequila of the same name is the largest city in the municipality and its administrative center ; other places with more than a thousand inhabitants are El Salvador and Santa Teresa .
The municipality of Tequila borders the municipalities of San Martín de Bolaños , Ahualulco de Mercado , Amatitán , Cristóbal de la Barranca , Zapopan , Hostotipaquillo , Magdalena and San Juanito de Escobedo, as well as the states of Zacatecas and Nayarit .
The municipal area is very rich in relics and lies between 700 m and 2300 m above sea level. With the exception of a few valleys, there are hardly any plains. The soil is stony and consists mainly of limestone, andesite, basalt and volcanic rock from the Tequila volcano.
