The Río Ameca is a river in western Mexico and about 230 km long. It rises at Bosque de la Primavera , 23 km west of Guadalajara . First, it runs west through the town of the same name, Ameca . On the way to the estuary, it forms the border between the two Mexican states of Jalisco and Nayarit for a few kilometers . Eventually it empties into the Pacific Ocean near Puerto Vallarta . The Ameca is also the home of the Ameca-Kärpflinge .
Water pollution
80% of the water bodies in the state of Jalisco are highly polluted . The water pollution of the Rio Ameca has several causes:
- Untreated water from the settlements of Tala, San Martín Hidalgo and Ameca
- Return of agricultural water
- Waste water from the Tala, Teuchitlán and Ameca sugar refineries
- The tributary of the Rio Mascota, which is polluted by chemical substances from mines .
According to a study by the University of Guadalajara, the water of the Presa de la Vega, which partly feeds Rio Ameca, is not suitable for irrigation due to the high salt and sodium carbonate content.
As part of the River Your Space (Rio tu Espacio) project, the city of Ameca is beautifying the banks and making efforts to improve the water quality of the river.
