Puerto Vallarta at night |
Along with Acapulco and Cancun, Puerto Vallarta is the most important seaside resort in Mexico , located on one of the largest bays ( Banderas Bay ) in America on the Pacific in the state of Jalisco . At the 2010 census, the city of Puerto Vallarta had 203,342 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat and largest town of the Municipio Puerto Vallarta .
About ten kilometers north - already in the state of Nayarit - is Nuevo Vallarta, which is more or less a hotel city with a marina, golf courses and miles of sandy beach.
The old town with the Malecón promenade is in the Spanish colonial style. Puerto Vallarta became famous in the 1960s for the filming of John Huston's 1964 film The Night of the Iguana , which was followed by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton who settled here and brought the international jet set here. Burton bought the Villa Kimberley house (now a hotel) for Elizabeth Taylor. They were married in the main church in Puerto Vallarta. In 1987 the film Predator with Arnold Schwarzenegger was shot in Puerto Vallarta, among others .
During the main travel season (October to May: almost no rain, pleasant temperatures and tolerable humidity), cruise ships stop here almost every day on their routes Los Angeles - Los Cabos - Mazatlán - Puerto Vallarta - Manzanillo - Acapulco. Due to the narrowness of the natural harbor, mooring and casting off the cruise ships, which are up to 300 meters long, is always a difficult operation.
In February, Puerto Vallarta is one of the most popular travel destinations for US students in Mexico for spring break, along with Cancun . Overall, the number of tourists in Puerto Vallarta has decreased by over a million since 2008; the number of foreign visitors fell between 2005 and 2010 from 1,057,029 to 431,181.
The city has an international airport ( IATA code PVR).
