Historic city center

Mazatlán is a city in Mexico . It is located in the state of Sinaloa , the administrative seat of which is the city. It is located on the Pacific Ocean , just across from the southernmost tip of Baja California .

Mazatlán is a word from the Nahuatl language and means "place of the deer". The city was founded in 1820. In the middle of the 19th century, a large group of German immigrants came to the city, who developed Mazatlán into a flourishing trading and port city. The development of the city was mainly based on the import of equipment for the nearby gold and silver mines . From 1859 to 1873 Mazatlán was the capital of Sinaloa. In March 1900, three master brewers of German origin founded the Cervecería del Pacífico .

Mazatlán with its 340,000 inhabitants (as of 2000) is the second largest city in the state of Sinaloa and Mexico's largest trading port , as well as the administrative seat of the Municipio Mazatlán and seat of the diocese of Mazatlán ( Mazatlán Cathedral ). The city is a popular tourist destination, numerous holiday hotels along the beach are the visible evidence. The El Faro lighthouse, at 152 meters above sea level, is considered the second highest in the world after that of Gibraltar. A car ferry ensures trade connections across the Gulf of California from Mazatlán to La Paz .

Well known far beyond the city limits are the Olas Oltas beach and the Paseo Olas Altas that runs past it, as well as the Hotel Belmar , located at number 166, where many Hollywood stars spent their holidays, especially in the 1950s .

In 2005 Mazatlán organized the “Serie del Caribe”. This is a baseball tournament with teams from Mexico, Puerto Rico , Venezuela and the Dominican Republic .

Mazatlán can be reached by plane via General Rafael Buelna International Airport .
