Pedro Infante Cruz , better known as Pedro Infante (born November 18, 1917 in Mazatlán , Sinaloa , † April 15, 1957 in Mérida , Yucatán ) was a Mexican actor and singer. With Pedro Armendáriz and Jorge Negrete , he was one of the best-known male stars of the "golden age" of Mexican film .

Life

Pedro Infante was the third of fifteen siblings, only nine of whom reached adulthood. Infante dropped out of school and worked as an errand boy and carpenter. In his youth he learned several instruments and became interested in popular music. He moved to Mexico City with his wealthy wife, María Luisa León, and began a career as a singer and actor. As a Ranchera singer, he became known through the XEB radio station in Mexico City. In 1939 he made his film debut. With Ismael Rodríguez 's films Nosotros los pobres (1947) and Ustedes los ricos (1948), Infante gained widespread public popularity with his open, people-loving manner. Contrary to the macho cliché widespread in contemporary Mexican film, in Roberto Rodríguez's Dicen que soy mujeriego (1948) he played a man who sees masculinity not in inflicting suffering, but in bearing it. In the 1950s, in addition to filming with Ismael Rodríguez, he also frequently filmed with directors Rogelio A. González and Miguel Zacarías . In 1955 and 1956 Infante received the Ariel film award . At the 1957 Berlin International Film Festival , he was posthumously awarded the Silver Bear for portraying the Aztec ruler Tízoc in the film of the same name .

His divorce from María Luisa León has not been recognized by the Mexican authorities. In addition to his lawful wife, Infante had two lovers, Lupita Torrentera and Irma Dorantes, with whom he had four children. Pedro Infante was an avid pilot and known for his daring flying style. He was killed in a crash on April 15, 1957. Thousands of mourners attended his funeral and tens of thousands of people were present to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his death. His films and records found an audience long after his death. Several film documentaries were made about him. In 2019, the film Como caído del cielo (Pedro's encore), directed by José Bojórquez , was released, which sees itself in a humorous way as an homage to the life of Pedro Infante.
