Jorge Negrete

Jorge Alberto Negrete Moreno (born November 30, 1911 in Guanajuato , † December 5, 1953 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Mexican singer and actor and is still one of the most popular Mexican artists.

Life

Jorge Negrete was born in Guanajuato as the eldest son of an officer's family. From 1925 he attended the military academy Heroico Colegio Militar and entered the Mexican army in 1928 with the rank of sub-lieutenant . Also in 1925 he began training as an opera singer in the singing school of José Pierson. In 1931 he left the army to devote himself exclusively to his singing career. He appeared in the Mexican opera house Bellas Artes and in radio programs. In 1935 he moved to New York and appeared on NBC programs and in various opera houses.

In 1937 Negrete returned to Mexico and appeared there for the first time in films. He made his debut in La Madrina del Diablo . He had his breakthrough in 1941 with ¡Ay Jalisco, no te rajes! . He played his most artistically demanding role in Luis Buñuel's Gran Casino . With his films and thanks to his expressive voice, Negrete became the epitome of “Charro Mexicano”. At the beginning of his film career, he mainly interpreted rancheros and popular pieces from the classical repertoire. He appeared in 44 films and recorded around four hundred music tracks. His popularity reached far beyond Mexico, he went on tours to Argentina , Chile , Peru , Colombia , Cuba and Spain, among others .

In 1940 he married the actress Elisa Christy , daughter of the actor Julio Villareal , with whom he had a child, Diana Negrete . Shortly after his marriage, he began a relationship with the actress Gloria Marín , whom he was shooting for ¡Ay Jalisco, no te rajes! and with whom he lived for about ten years. In 1952 he married the actress María Félix , what contemporaries referred to as the “wedding of the century”.

He contracted hepatitis on his first trip to New York and suffered from the disease throughout his life. Despite his condition worsening, he traveled to Los Angeles in November 1953 , where he died on December 5, 1953 in Cedars of Lebanon Hospital.

His body was transferred to Mexico. At his burial on the Panteón Civil de Dolores, tens of thousands of people paid their last respects to Jorge Negrete.
