The Cathedral of Mazatlán or the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de la Inmaculada Concepción ) is located in the port city of Mazatlán in the Mexican state of Sinaloa . The cathedral of the Mazatlán diocese was built in the second half of the 19th century in the style of eclecticism and is a listed building.

history

Work on the church began in 1856 on behalf of the then Bishop of Guadelajara, Pedro José de Jesús Loza y Pardavé. The pastor Miguel Lacarra later took over the management of the building, which was completed in 1899; the first mass had already been celebrated in 1880. In 1937 it was consecrated in honor of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Mother of God . Pope Pius XII awarded the church the title of minor basilica in 1941. With the creation of the Matzatán diocese, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1958.

architecture

The three-aisled hall church was designed by Estanislao León on a rectangular floor plan. The octagonal dome illuminates the sanctuary and carries a lantern with an iron cross. The two church towers consist of three floors, on which pyramid-shaped spiers rise with crosses. Three neo-Gothic inspired arches lead to the church gate on the main facade . They carry the triangular pediment with their pilasters. In the portal area there are statues of the four evangelists on the walls. The church is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. In this enclosure there are two statues of Christ the King and one of St. Juan Diego in front of the church .

Furnishing

inner space

Inside the building, the eclecticism shows elements in the neo-gothic and neo-baroque style and also with a classical influence. On the neo-Gothic main altar are statues made of Carrara marble together with the images of St. Anna and St. Joachim . The Last Supper is sculptured on the front of the white marble altar . Two of the four neoclassical side altars are on the sides of the main altar, the other two on the sides of the main entrance.

Behind the main altar is a sculpture of the Immaculate Conception and a majestic mural depicting the Holy Trinity surrounded by angels and other celestial figures. The frescoes on the sides of the main altar date from 1942. The 14 sculptures of the Way of the Cross are probably of Italian origin. Various saints are depicted on the paintings on the walls.

The great organ was built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in Paris in 1888 as Werk 627 with two manuals and 21 stops and played for the first time on May 17, 1899.
