Willem Werner Hubert "Willy" Claes (born November 24, 1938 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian politician of the Flemish Socialist Party .

Life

Claes was a member of the Belgian Parliament from 1968, between 1973 and 1992 he was Belgian Minister of Economic Affairs with two interruptions, in 1992 he became Foreign Minister and Party Chairman in the Federation of Social Democratic Parties of the European Community , from November 1994 to March 1995 of the Party of European Socialists (SPE). After Manfred Wörner's death , Claes became NATO Secretary General in 1994 . In 1995, however, he had to resign because of his involvement in the Agusta affair .
