Mark Eyskens (2005)

Mark Eyskens is the son of Gaston Eyskens , who was also Prime Minister of Belgium. He is a member of the CD&V .

Life

Eyskens completed his studies at the Catholic University of Leuven with several degrees, including in the field of philosophy . He also obtained a doctorate in law and economics from the Catholic University of Leuven. In 1967 he was appointed economics professor.

In 1962 his political career began as an advisor to Finance Minister André Dequae . In 1976 he was Minister of the CVP in the government of Leo Tindemans . From 1976 to 1992 he was a member of thirteen governments, including ministers of finance and foreign affairs.

In April 1981 he became Prime Minister of a coalition government between the Christian Democrats and the Socialists . On September 21, the government fell over a dispute over the financing of the Walloon steel industry . In the early elections on November 8, 1981, citizens between the ages of 18 and 21 were allowed to vote for the first time on the initiative of the Eyskens government. However, as a result of these elections on December 17, Eyskens was replaced as Prime Minister by his predecessor Wilfried Martens .

From 1977 to 1995 Eyskens was a member of the Leuven district. Since 1992 he has been a member of the European Parliament and the Conference of the Western European Union . From 1992 to November 1998 he taught economics again. He has been Minister of State since November 18, 1998 . In 1989 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .

Besides his job, Eyskens is a painter and writer.
