Louis Michel [ ˈlwi miˈʃɛl ] (born September 2, 1947 in Tienen ) is a Belgian politician and member of the European Parliament .

Life

He studied Indo-European and taught in Jodoigne . Michel is a member of the French-speaking liberal party Mouvement Réformateur (MR). From 1980 to 1982 he was the political secretary general, between 1982 and 1990 and 1995 to 1999 he was president of the party.

He was elected to the Belgian parliament in 1978 . Between 1992 and 1995 he was parliamentary group leader and vice-president of the Liberal International . In 1995 he became Minister of State.

Between 1978 and 1999 he was mayor of Jodoigne. In 1999 he became his country's foreign and foreign trade minister.

From 2004 to 2009 he was Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid in the EU Commission Barroso . In the 2009 European elections , Michel ran as the top candidate of his party and won a seat in the European Parliament .

He is married and has two children. His son Charles Michel has been Prime Minister of Belgium since October 11, 2014 and President of the European Council since December 1, 2019 .

criticism

Michel is accused by the Belgian media and lobby plag of having made more than 100 applications to weaken data protection in an industrial manner. Michel himself declares that he never saw, knew or signed the amendments. The applications were submitted and signed by his assistant, Luc Paque.
