Commissioner for Development

The Development Commissioner is a member of the European Commission . The Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development reports to him . The department has existed since the European Economic Community was founded in 1958, initially under the name Overseas Development . From 1970 to 1973 there was no commissioner, in 1973 the department was re-established under the new name of Development and Humanitarian Aid . When the Barroso II Commission took office in February 2010, the area of humanitarian aid and crisis protection was outsourced to a separate department.

In the Von der Leyen Commission , the office is called International Partnership . The commissioner is Jutta Urpilainen .
