The Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society is a member of the European Commission . At the level of the European Union, it is responsible for the promotion, further development and dissemination of information and communication technologies, including telecommunications . The Directorate General for Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (GD Connect, CNECT) is assigned to him.

The office of the Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society has existed under various names since 1985. Most recently it was called the Digital Agenda until 2014 . The current incumbent in the Juncker Commission , which began its work in November 2014, has been Bulgarian Marija Gabriel since July 10, 2017 .
