history

Business area

The Sparda-Bank Münster eG was founded on November 14, 1900 as a savings and loan fund of the Emden Railway Association as a self-help facility by railway workers for railway workers. The business balance at that time was 830 marks, 750 were savings deposits. The cooperative had 76 members when it was founded. In 1912 the headquarters were moved from Emden to Münster.

The number of members grew rapidly over the next few decades. When the Reichsbahn savings and loan funds in Münster and Oldenburg merged in 1935, the cooperative had 13,000 members. After the end of the war in 1945, the cash register resumed business in the station building in Münster. At the end of the 1960s, the cash register opened to public service employees. In 1975 the bank had over 35,000 members and a balance sheet total of over 200 million marks.

1980 - the cash register has now changed its name to Sparda-Bank Münster eG - the bank opened its first three branches in Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven. In the years to come, many more branches were opened in the business area from the North Sea to the edge of the Ruhr area. In 1997 the 90,000th member joined the cooperative. The bank started construction of a new administration building in the north center in Münster. In 2000 the cooperative had 100,000 members.

In 2016, Sparda-Bank Münster was one of the largest regional cooperative banks in Germany with around 150,000 members, 16 branches and total assets of 2.3 billion euros. In addition to Münster, the company's headquarters were in Osnabrück and Oldenburg. Further branches of the Sparda-Bank Münster were found in Cloppenburg, Coesfeld, Emden, Gronau, Haltern am See, Ibbenbüren, Leer, Lingen, Rheine and Wilhelmshaven.

In 2010, the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer center warned Sparda-Bank Münster about high interest rates for overdraft facilities and failure to pass on the lower refinancing costs to customers, and filed a lawsuit because the bank did not sign a declaration of cease and desist. In June 2014, Sparda-Bank Münster announced that it would abolish the additional interest for overdrafts on overdrafts from July 2014.

On October 16, 2015, the bank's supervisory board terminated the employment contract of CEO Enrico Kahl without notice and convened an extraordinary meeting of representatives. On November 13, 2015, she decided to dismiss him without notice for fraudulent expenses.

On January 22, 2016, the bank announced that it would head the company with two instead of three board members.
