history

The bank was founded in 1957 as Curt Briechle KG sales financing by the businessman of the same name in Mönchengladbach as a sales financing company for automobiles. In 1968 the company was converted into a stock corporation and renamed Bankhaus Centrale Credit AG.

In 1987, the major Spanish bank Banco Santander Central Hispano (BSCH) acquired 100% of the bank and renamed it CC-Bank AG. In 1988 the Royal Bank of Scotland acquired 50% of the shares in CC-Bank. In 1996 Santander Central Hispano bought the shares back from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

In 2002 the Cologne-based AKB Privat- und Handelsbank merged with the CC-Bank AG. The Cologne headquarters of AKB on Friesenplatz was dissolved. In 2003, Santander Direkt Bank AG from Frankfurt , which also belongs to the BSCH Group, was merged with CC-Bank.

On October 1, 2004, the bank's market presence was adapted to the corporate design of the Spanish parent company. Since then the brand has been called Santander Consumer CC-Bank; the official company name was initially still CC-Bank AG. In August 2007 the company was officially renamed in the commercial register to Santander Consumer Bank AG.

On July 1, 2008, the Royal Bank of Scotland sold its ECF (European Consumer Finance) consumer credit business to Santander Consumer Finance . This also included RBS (RD Europe) GmbH with branches in Ratingen (Germany), Houten (Netherlands), Merelbeke (Belgium) and Vienna (Austria), which are now part of the German Santander Consumer Holding GmbH. With the purchase, the ComfortCard trademark was also adopted in the countries mentioned.

On July 1, 2009, GE Money Bank GmbH from Hanover , which had already been acquired in November 2008, was merged with Santander Consumer Bank AG.

In July 2010 it was announced that the German private customer business of SEB will be sold to Banco Santander. The purchase price for the 173 SEB branches was 555 million euros. As of January 31, 2011, the private customer business with around 1 million customers and around 2,400 employees was transferred to Santander and now operates under the name of Santander Bank - a branch of Santander Consumer Bank AG.

On July 1, 2016, PSA Bank Deutschland GmbH started, a joint venture in which Santander Consumer Bank AG has a 50 percent stake. With the brands Peugeot Bank and Citroën Bank, PSA Bank offers car financing, leasing products and dealer financing. Insole products are available from PSA Direktbank.

In September 2016, Santander Consumer Bank AG obtained the Pfandbrief license. At the end of November 2017, the bank issued a Pfandbrief for the first time.

In 2018, Santander Consumer Bank AG will standardize its branding and will only appear in Germany with “Santander”. In the course of this, the sales networks of “Santander Consumer Bank”, “Santander Direkt Bank” and “Santander Bank” were merged.

Corporate headquarters and new work concept

Since the number of employees rose to over 1,300 after the merger with AKB Bank in 2002 and they worked at five different locations in Mönchengladbach, a new company headquarters was built on Karmannsstrasse in Mönchengladbach by mid-2007 at Santander-Platz 1.

In the building planned by the architects Hentrich-Petschnigg & Partner, the employees of Santander Consumer Bank AG work with the so-called New Work concept. Meeting rooms for larger groups or small rooms, so-called “think tanks”, for 1 to 3 people are used for communication, as are “chill-out lounges” or coffee bars.

Between 2013 and 2015, another building complex was also built in Mönchengladbach on Madrider Straße in Nordpark within sight of Borussia Park , the shape and layout of which is based on the company's headquarters on Santander-Platz.

engagement

In the global Santander Universities division , the bank maintains partnerships with more than 1,200 academic institutions in 20 countries worldwide, including the German universities of Bremen , Heidelberg , Cologne , the Humboldt University of Berlin , the Free University of Berlin , and the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf , Justus Liebig University Gießen , Goethe University Frankfurt , Georg-August University Göttingen , Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , Saarland University , Eberhard Karls University Tübingen , Technical University Dresden , Technical University Munich and the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences . In addition, Santander Universities is a premium partner of the German University Association and a partner of the Stifterverband for German science .

criticism

Santander Consumer Bank AG is not a member of the private banking employers' association and is therefore not bound by collective agreements . At Santander, according to the union, there is a "proliferation of different remuneration", which has arisen in recent years through the acquisitions of banks. Almost a third of the employees are employed in an in-house temporary employment agency and outsourced subsidiaries. According to Jörg Reinbrecht from the ver.di financial services department, there are “even employees who only work on a commission basis, with no fixed salary at all. They work in small branches that only sell loans, nothing else ”. The bank denies this.

The ver.di union has been negotiating a company wage agreement with Santander since February 2012. In particular, the employees taken over by SEB called for their collective agreement to continue to apply to all Santander employees. In April 2013, after 14 months of negotiations, an agreement was reached between Santander and ver.di. A collective agreement came into effect retrospectively as of April 1, 2013 for employees in the branches. There is still no collective bargaining agreement for employees in the head offices; Santander Consumer Bank has committed to collective bargaining with ver.di for 2014.

Santander moved away from the free current account in the spring of 2012 and demanded account management fees from some of the customers again . The information to the affected customers was packaged as a marketing campaign. In a ruling from November 2012, the Mönchengladbach Regional Court saw the bank's approach as misleading customers; a change to the contract requires the customer's express consent.

Consumer advocates also criticize illegal fees for loans. For example, Santander charges processing fees of up to 3.5 percent of the loan amount for installment loans. There are now several court rulings against Santander due to loan processing fees. Because of the large number of those affected, consumer advocates have organized a protection association for bank customers, which has already filed 150 cases against banks to repay the fees.

In 2015, consumer advocates criticized unjustified and unacceptably high fees for address inquiries, reminders and canceled direct debits.
