The Santander Consumer Finance, SA , based in Madrid , is an international Spanish banking group . As a subsidiary of Banco Santander, SA it specializes in loan finance . These include business loans for companies in the automotive and retail sectors, as well as financing solutions for consumers such as car financing , consumer loans , leasing and credit cards .

Santander Consumer Finance operates in 17 countries and employs more than 13,800 people. As of 2009 it had total assets of 61.663 billion euros. In Europe, Santander Consumer Finance is active in Germany with Santander Consumer Bank AG , in Austria with Santander Consumer Bank GmbH and in the Benelux countries with Santander Consumer Finance Benelux BV .

history

The company was founded in 1963 under the name Banco de Fomento, SA . In the 1970s, Banco Santander entered the consumer finance business with the founding of Bansafina in 1972 and Hispamer in 1978. With the takeover of CC Bank, founded in 1975, what was then the consumer finance division of Bank of America in Germany, Banco Santander expanded its field of activity in this area abroad. In 2001 the Santander Group's consumer finance business was bundled into the reorganized Santander Consumer Finance, SA. This was followed by international expansion with takeovers in various countries.
