The National-Bank AG (spelling: NATIONAL-BANK ) is one of the medium-sized regional banks in Germany. With around 600 employees, it provides services for around 100,000 private customers, freelancers, corporate customers and medium-sized institutional investors.

history

The National Bank was founded in 1921 under the name Deutsche Volksbank as the bank of the Christian trade union movement for the so-called “little people”. In that year Adam Stegerwald commissioned Heinrich Brüning , who later became Chancellor of the Reich , to found the Vereinsbank for German Labor AG in Berlin, where the headquarters of the General Association of Christian Trade Unions was also located. In the same year the institute was named Deutsche Volksbank AG . In October 1922, the general meeting voted to move its headquarters to Essen. However, the occupation of the Ruhr and hyperinflation represented considerable burdens. In addition, the managers were mostly not banking specialists, but officials of the trade union organizations; In addition, the business model fluctuated between a trade union “savings bank ” and a financing instrument for cooperative and social projects. In 1931 the bank was on the brink.

In 1933, when the NSDAP came to power , the name was changed to National-Bank and a strategic reorientation as a regional Mittelstandsbank followed. The Essen Gauleiter Josef Terboven installed his confidante and publishing director Wolfgang Müller-Clemm as a controller in the bank. The union shares were taken over by the Bank of German Labor, which performed a kind of holding function for the German Labor Front . There was a capitalization and a realignment on medium-sized companies with an affinity to National Socialism and their credit needs. Hence it got the new name. Hochtief , Krupp , Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerke , Stinnes and Vereinigte Stahlwerke became shareholders, but the largest investor was the Bank für Industrie-Obligationen (from which the industrial credit bank IKB emerged ). The bank tried to participate in the " Aryanization " of the Simon Hirschland banking house in Essen, but only succeeded in purchasing a stake in the new Burkhard & Co. banking house by means of a substantial capital increase. With the takeover of Duisburger Bankverein AG in 1942, the institute expanded through acquisitions.

After the war, the British left the bank in their zone of occupation , but the management board was completely replaced. In 1957 Oberhausener Bank AG was taken over. IKB held the largest share of around 26.4%. It was sold to the Signal Iduna Group in 2000 . From the late 1990s the Essener Bank expanded its activities to Dortmund , Düsseldorf and Wuppertal (2008). Like many other banks, however, it invested in securitized claims on the US mortgage market . These papers were considered "toxic" after the collapse of the IKB. There was a restructuring and a strategic realignment towards so-called wealth management for wealthy private customers. In 2013, the regional bank cut around 70 jobs as a result of the financial crisis.

In 2014, the National Bank opened another branch in Münster, which in 2016 had a total of 14 employees.

In February 2016, the National Bank withdrew from the cities of Recklinghausen , Hattingen and Gladbeck and reduced its branch network in Essen by two locations (E-Frohnhausen and E-Kray).

Others

The National Bank is active in the Ruhr area within the framework of art and culture funding. The Folkwang Museum in Essen, the NRW Art Collection and the Kunstpalast Museum in Düsseldorf are supported by a foundation fund of the bank. In addition, the bank, along with other credit institutions, is a member of the Ruhr Initiative Group .
