The Pax-Bank eG , headquartered in Cologne, is a “Bank for Church and Caritas ”, a cooperative , Catholic universal bank . The members are made up of institutions of the Catholic Church and private individuals from the church sector. The bank was founded as Pax Spar- und Autovermietung eGmbH as a self-help organization by priests for priests on October 18, 1917 in Cologne. The forerunner organization was the Pax Association of Catholic Clerics from Cologne, founded in 1905 , in which priests supported each other.

The Pax-Bank is one of the four Catholic church banks in North Rhine-Westphalia , along with the Bank for Church and Caritas eG , Paderborn, the DKM Loanhnskasse Münster and the bank in the Diocese of Essen . The clientele consists mainly of dioceses , religious orders , parishes and their social institutions. Private customers are also an important pillar of the bank. In contrast to the past, non-Christians can also become customers today.

190 employees, spread across the head office in Cologne and other branches in Aachen (since 1958), Berlin (since 1992), Erfurt (since 1992), Essen (since 1958), Heilbad Heiligenstadt (office, since 2005), Mainz (since 1985 ) and Trier (since 1980) serve around 30,000 customers (private customers / institutions). Since 2001 the bank has had a representative office in Rome near the Vatican .

In addition to the services of a universal bank , the core business areas are ethical investments (e.g. microfinance investments ) and asset management . The services also include its own range of funds (LIGA-Pax-Union-Fonds), real estate advice, EU funding, fundraising and foundation advice.

According to the bank’s official self- image , ethics and sustainability are of particular importance. Internal and external actions are subject to an ethical code that determines economic activity in the area of ​​tension between ethics and the pursuit of profit.

The bank is the first church bank in Germany to offer a crowdfunding platform . Non-profit and public institutions and organizations can present their project ideas on the platform, disseminate them and thus finance the required capital.

In August 2009 it became known that a non-ethically oriented investment fund of the bank contained shares in an arms and tobacco company and a pharmaceutical manufacturer that also produces contraceptives. The company management sold the affected papers immediately after they became known. In addition, the control mechanisms were refined and the ethical orientation of all funds was reviewed.

Pax bank price

The bank has been awarding the “Pax Bank Prize” for interreligious dialogue every year since 2005 and is advised by the Georges Anawati Foundation . The prize is endowed with € 5,000 and is presented by the CEO.

In 2017, the former German Federal President Christian Wulff was honored for his commitment to intercultural-religious dialogue.
