Karl Jüsten

Karl Jüsten (born September 7, 1961 in Bad Honnef ) is a German priest of the Roman Catholic Church and since 2000 head of the Commissariat of the German Bishops - Catholic Office in Berlin .

Career

After studying Catholic theology in Freiburg, Innsbruck and Bonn, Karl Jüsten was ordained a priest on June 26, 1987 and was then chaplain for three years in the Cologne districts of Junkersdorf and Müngersdorf. From 1990 he worked for four years as a prefect in the training of priests at the Archbishop's Seminary in Cologne. In 1996 the Archbishop of Cologne entrusted him with the management of the Pastoral Services Department and Deputy Head of the Pastoral Care Department in the Archbishopric General Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Cologne . After further studies, Jüsten received his doctorate in 1999 from the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with a thesis on the ethics and ethos of democracy .

Offices and honors

Since March 1st, 2000 Jüsten has been head of the Commissariat of the German Bishops -  Catholic Office in Berlin. In this capacity he is chairman of the Catholic Central Agency for Development Aid. V. (KZE) based in Aachen, together with the authorized representative of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany, chairman of the Joint Conference Church and Development and member of various other church bodies.

Jüsten is chairman of the supervisory board of Pax-Bank  eG., Member of the supervisory board of the insurance association in the area of ​​the churches (VRK), member of the supervisory board of the Aachen settlement and housing company in Cologne, member of the central committee of the German Catholics as well as member of the presidium of the German society for the United Nations . On March 14, 2014 he was elected Chairman of the Broadcasting Council of Deutsche Welle .

In 2000 Jüsten was Pope John Paul II. For prelates appointed. In 2005 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class by Federal President Horst Köhler .

Funeral service for Guido Westerwelle

On April 2, 2016, Jüsten and Prelate Martin Dutzmann held the ecumenical funeral service for the deceased former Federal Foreign Minister. D. Guido Westerwelle in the St. Aposteln Basilica in Cologne . Jüsten, who, like Westerwelle, was born in Bad Honnef in 1961 and had known him well since childhood, gave a personal funeral speech and also turned to Westerwelle's partner Michael Mronz .
