Michael Mronz (born March 1, 1967 in Cologne ) is a German entrepreneur, sports and event manager .

Life

Michael Mronz grew up as the youngest son of the gallery owner Ute Mronz and the architect Johannes Mronz in Cologne-Junkersdorf . He was enthusiastic about sport from an early age. His brother is the former tennis professional Alexander Mronz . Michael Mronz began organizing tennis tournaments while studying business administration in Göttingen . In the winter semester of 1999 he completed his business studies at the University of Cologne with a degree in business administration .

Mronz has been the partner of FDP politician Guido Westerwelle since 2003 . On September 17, 2010, Michael Mronz and Guido Westerwelle (then Foreign Minister in the Merkel II cabinet ) entered into a civil partnership in Bonn . Westerwelle died on March 18, 2016 of complications from leukemia .

Career

In 1989 Michael Mronz organized his first tennis tournament, the Pohland Cup in Cologne, and later the Cologne Open .

In 1992 Mronz founded the sole proprietorship MM Promotion Michael Mronz, which was renamed Michael Mronz eK in November 2016. In 2005 he founded MMP Event GmbH as a specialist for premium entertainment events in Germany. Current projects include the BMW Open by FWU ATP tournament in Munich, the largest darts event in the world, the German Darts Masters , the Christmas singing in Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park and the VELTINS Arena with more than 80,000 singers as well as the ProSieben winter games.

Michael Mronz advises companies, associations as well as individuals and clubs in the areas of sports sponsorship and sports marketing . He was also responsible for the marketing of major TV events, the best-known being Stefan Raab's Wok World Cup , the Bundesvision Song Contest and TV total high diving . He also advised the organizers of the German DTM racing series and the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin for several years .

Michael Mronz, who does not ride himself, has been managing director of Aachener Reitturnier GmbH (ART) since October 1st, 1997 , which is responsible for the marketing of the CHIO Aachen , the largest equestrian event in the world. Through this position Mronz was also head of the organizing committee of the 2006 World Equestrian Games , after taking place in the same year the World Cup is the second largest sporting event of the year in Germany . For the first time since the founding of these world championships for driving and equestrian sports in 1990, the event ended with a positive financial balance. After the great success of the World Equestrian Championships, the specialist magazine “Horizont” named Michael Mronz “Sports Manager of the Year”.

At the 2009 World Athletics Championships , he was head of marketing and was responsible for marketing and ticketing.

Until December 2003 he was a partner and managing director of American Sports GmbH , where the first women's and first men's teams of the Bundesliga basketball team RheinEnergie Köln are outsourced. He left because of differing views on the future direction of the organizational structure .

Since January 2007 Michael Mronz has been a board member of the German America's Cup team United Internet Team Germany , where he was responsible for press and marketing, among other things.

In 2005, the Bild newspaper put Mronz at number 49 on its Beau hit list.

Michael Mronz has been the initiator and organizer of the private-sector initiative "Rhein Ruhr City 2032" since 2016. Mronz has developed a concept for this that focuses on sustainability and the use of existing sports and event facilities. In 2018, Mronz founded Rhein Ruhr City GmbH, based in Essen, which is the organizer of the “Metropolitan Cities” congress in Aachen.

In 2017 he founded the PR company “ Storymachine ” based in Berlin with Philipp Jessen, ex-boss of stern.de , and ex-Bild-Editor Kai Diekmann .

In 2002 Mronz was a member of the board of the Hanne Nüsslein Foundation of the KTHC Stadion Rot-Weiss . The foundation has set itself the goal of promoting young tennis talent.

In 2016, after the death of his husband, he took over the chairmanship of the Westerwelle Foundation , which campaigns internationally for democracy , the rule of law , the social market economy , tolerance and political and economic participation. For several years Mronz was on the board of the children's aid organization “ Ein Herz für Kinder ”, most recently as chairman of the board.
