The United Internet Team Germany is a sailing team that was the first German challenger campaign to take part in the heats and elimination regattas for the America's Cup . The boat and crew are sponsored by United Internet AG , its CEO Ralph Dommermuth from private assets, and since September 2007 also by Audi .

Participation in the 32nd America's Cup

The team included the two-time Olympic champion and experienced America's Cup skipper Jesper Bank and his former crews Henrik Blakskjær and Thomas Jacobsen . The "A team" included the Germans Matti Paschen , Markus Koy , Jan Schoepe , Nicolai Jeschonnek and Michael Müller as well as, alternating with Henning's son, shot putter Oliver-Sven Buder , both grinders. “Substitute teams” include Stefan Grossmann , Christian Buck, Jochen Wolfram and Alexander Krause . Former America's Cup winner David Dellenbaugh was hired as co-skipper and tactician .

On April 29, 2005, the United Internet Team Germany reported a German boat for the first time in the 154-year history of the America's Cup a few hours before the deadline.

First of all, the pre-regattas - the so-called Louis Vuitton Acts - were sailed with the GER 72 boat, bought second-hand , which Mascalzone Latino already used under the sail number ITA 72 at the Louis Vuitton Cup 2003 off New Zealand. After the purchase by the United Internet Team Germany, the boat was modified and further developed, but was rarely able to achieve good placements.

All hopes were focused on the new boat that the team had built in the Knierim shipyard in Kiel . It was christened Germany I on April 24, 2006 by Eva Luise Köhler , the wife of the then Federal President, and bears the sailing number GER 89 , which was assigned according to the time of measurement . The Germany I was sailed in a regatta for the first time with the Louis Vuitton Act 13 in spring 2007.

The United Internet Team Germany ended its participation in the Louis Vuitton Cup 2007 (the America's Cup is played between the challenger and the winner of the LV Cup) with a penultimate place in the overall ranking. With just two victories in 20 races sailed in the main round of the Louis Vuitton Cup, it did not live up to its previously set goals.

As a result, Jesper Bank resigned from his position shortly after leaving.

Preparations for the 33rd America's Cup

After leaving the Louis Vuitton Cup, even before Alinghi had successfully defended the America's Cup and thus secured the continuation of the event in Europe, the team already placed the order for the construction of a new cupper. The ship had already received the sailing number GER 101 and was to serve as a training boat and technology carrier for a new campaign for the next cup. With the purchase of the SUI 91 from Alinghi, next to the SUI 100 one of the fastest ships of the previous cup, the construction of the GER 101 was abandoned in September 2007. The new rules introduce a new type of boat, the old boats are only used for pre-regattas. A new building according to the old regulations was obviously no longer worth the effort and the associated risk.

The German-Pole Karol Jabłoński was also hired as the new skipper and helmsman at an early stage . He had made a name for himself as the helmsman for the Spanish team Desafío Español by moving into the semi-finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup.

On August 5, 2007, syndicate boss Michael Scheeren submitted the official challenge for the 33rd America's Cup, which was accepted by the ACM as the fifth entry from a team on August 31.

On September 19, 2007, far-reaching decisions for participation in the next Cup 2009 in Valencia were announced: Jochen Schümann , the most successful and best-known German sailor, who previously won and defended the Cup with Alinghi, will be the new sporting director (team boss) of the campaign would have. Audi was won as the second main sponsor alongside United Internet. In addition, the technology partner Porsche Consulting will in future be responsible for building the new yachts.

The purchase of SUI 91 (henceforth GER 91 ) and the construction freeze for GER 101 were also announced at this press conference.

It was also announced that the Briton Jason Ker, previously a yacht designer for the South African team Shosholoza, has joined the design team for the German campaign.

The end for United Internet Team Germany

In view of the uncertainties in the current 33rd Cup cycle up until spring 2008, United Internet Team Germany was decided on March 10, 2008 - by mutual agreement of the three main sponsors (United Internet, Audi AG and Porsche Consulting) - on March 31, 2008 dissolved. In a statement issued on October 5, 2010, it was announced that the 34th cup cycle would not be taken part in either. Finally, in April 2012, all of the hardware for the team base in the former venue in Valencia was sold.

In the struggle for power in the America's Cup between cup defender Alinghi and the US sailing team BMW Oracle Racing, the decision of the New York Supreme Court is still awaited in spring 2008 . A double-digit million dollar claim for damages filed by Team New Zealand against Alinghi during the same period caused additional complications.

The German Challenger Yacht Club (DCYC) will initially remain as a project organization. A core team around the previous sports director Jochen Schümann tried to find alternative projects for the upcoming 2008 sailing season. The considerations and efforts went towards the Grand Prix series on the previous America's Cup yachts in several European port cities. There was a similar sailing event off Kiel , namely the German Sailing Grand Prix in 2006. There should be interest from four European organizers, including Kiel, Trieste and Valencia .
