The Strato AG is an Internet service provider based in Berlin . It belongs to the United Internet group of companies .

The company has over 2 million customer contracts and approximately 4 million domains hosted . It has a total of around 500 employees, including the employees of the subsidiary Cronon GmbH, which specializes in hosting and IT services for companies, and Strato Customer Service GmbH.

history

The company was founded in 1997 by the former Escom board member Marc Alexander Ullrich and the former 1 & 1 managing director Norbert Stangl . As part of the www.wunschname.de campaign , standardized web hosting packages with their own domain were sold from May 1998. In the same year, the two founders sold Strato to the Berlin company TELES .

Initially, the company pursued an outsourcing concept. Strato limited itself to the marketing, for the technology the partner company Xlink (later KPNQwest Deutschland GmbH) was responsible. Due to the low offer price for web space and an increasing number of customers, the situation arose in 1999/2000 that a significant proportion of German websites was hosted on a single server, a Sun Enterprise 6500 that was overloaded with mass storage from EMC. After repeated, sensational server failures, this design proved unsustainable. In 2002 Strato was able to make itself independent of technology partners by acquiring the Karlsruhe data center of the insolvent KPNQwest. Initially, the entire technology was operated by the specially founded sister company Strato Rechenzentrum AG, which also provided a small amount of services for third-party companies. In the meantime, Strato Rechenzentrum AG has been merged with Strato AG.

On December 12, 2004, TELES sold Strato to freenet AG for a purchase price of 132 million euros. On November 19, 2009, freenet announced the takeover of Strato by Deutsche Telekom . According to the freenet press release, the purchase price was EUR 275 million. On December 18, 2009, the Federal Cartel Office approved the takeover by Deutsche Telekom.

In December 2016, United Internet announced that it would take over Strato for around EUR 600 million; the takeover took place after approval by the antitrust authorities on April 1, 2017.

Data centers

The company operates a data center in Berlin and one in Karlsruhe , with the data being mirrored between the two locations. More than 70,000 servers with 4 million domains are operated and managed. Both data centers have been certified for their security according to ISO 27001 annually since 2004 . Since 2008, the data centers have been operated completely CO 2 -neutral with electricity from hydropower .

Web hosting

The company markets web hosting packages and domains in Germany, since April 2006 in other European countries (Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Great Britain) and since 2016 in Turkey. The focus is on so-called shared hosting , in which several customers share a physical server. After 1 & 1 , Strato is the second largest supplier of such products in Europe. The last major update to the web hosting platform was in January 2012.

server

The company has been offering dedicated servers since the end of 2003, and virtual servers since 2005 . In February 2007 a special variant of the dedicated server was presented, which can only be used as a game server . Strato also offers managed servers . The company also sells the managed backup solution for servers from Acronis .

Cloud storage

Since March 2010 the company has been offering an online hard drive called HiDrive. This has a capacity between 20 gigabytes and five terabytes. The data is accessed either via a web-based interface or via the WebDAV , FTP , FTPS , SFTP , SMB , rsync or SCP protocols . Strato also offers apps for mobile access from iOS , Android and Windows Phone as well as a software client for the Windows and Mac operating systems .

Internet access

In spring 2004, the company began selling DSL access. Connections based on T-DSL resale and line sharing with bundled telecommunications landline connections were offered as well as, since December 2006, complete unbundled DSL connections without a conventional landline connection based on fully unbundled subscriber lines and, since July 2008, also on the basis of telecommunications Bitstream . The DSL package was offered by Strato, but freenet Broadband GmbH had implemented it since 2007. The telephony was implemented by Strato as a VoIP connection .

Strato no longer offers its own DSL connections, and new customers can no longer order the complete package.

Products for companies

Since June 2008, the company has been offering web-based solutions for corporate communication and customer relationship management . For this purpose, a business customer portal with special offers for small and medium-sized companies was opened, through which software as a service is sold. Since August 2015, Strato has been offering the business customer area Business Solutions for small and medium-sized companies, resellers and system houses , which sells individual web hosting and server solutions.
