The 1 & 1 Ionos SE [ iː'ɔnɔs ] based in Montabaur is a German Internet service provider , who as 1 & 1 Internet AG - later 1 & 1 Internet SE - especially through its Web hosting - and DSL products became known. The company belongs to the United Internet group and was founded in 1988 by Ralph Dommermuth .

The business with Internet access (DSL and mobile communications) was spun off into 1 & 1 Telecommunication . The web hosting and cloud hosting business remained in the 1 & 1 Internet . In 2018 it changed its name to 1 & 1 Ionos .

history

The story began with the founding of 1 & 1 EDV-Marketing GmbH by Ralph Dommermuth and Wendelin Abresch in 1988. The company initially positioned itself as a service provider for marketing and advertising in electronic media. Also Datex-J accounts, however, were offered.

In 1992 1 & 1 entered into a cooperation with Deutsche Telekom to market the up to now comparatively unsuccessful online service BTX . This collaboration resulted in the first online service from 1 & 1 that users can use to dial into the Internet. 1 & 1 used the complete infrastructure of T-Online , only in 1996 did 1 & 1 start a service based on its own technology.

After acquiring a stake in Schlund + Partner AG in 1998 and gradually increasing it to 100 percent, 1 & 1 opened a new data center in Karlsruhe in 1999 . The acquisition of Schlund + Partner goes hand in hand with the entry into the web hosting market .

United Internet AG was founded in 2000 and acts as the new parent company of 1 & 1 Internet AG . The entire access and web hosting business of the brands 1 & 1 and Schlund + Partner have been bundled under the subgroup 1 & 1 .

In addition to shared hosting , 1 & 1 has also been offering dedicated servers since 2001 . At CeBit 2002, a cooperation with Microsoft was also announced, from which a hosting offer based on .NET technology emerged.

United Internet took over the Internet portal Web.de in 2005 , which was merged with the mail provider GMX and is now operated within the 1 & 1 group by 1 & 1 Mail & Media GmbH .

1 & 1 has been a full-service provider of telephone and Internet connections in Germany since 2007. The company continues to rely on the Deutsche Telekom network, but also uses the infrastructure of Telefónica Germany and QSC for the so-called last mile .

In 2010, 1 & 1 entered into a cooperation with Vodafone and has also been a mobile operator since then . In 2014, a further usage contract with E-Plus followed , so that 1 & 1 now offers its mobile customers either connections in the D-Netz or the E-Netz. This usage contract was taken over by Telefónica Germany after the dissolution of E-Plus.

The strategy, which had been pursued for a while, of accelerating international expansion by establishing its own branches, was not pursued after moderate results in Poland and Italy. Instead, the focus was now on taking over direct competitors, such as the Spanish market leader Arsys in 2013 and home.pl in Poland in 2015 . Together with the takeover of home.pl, a possible IPO of the web hosting segment in 2017 was also discussed.

In 2016, Warburg Pincus acquired a 33.33 percent stake in 1 & 1 Internet SE as part of a strategic partnership.

On September 8, 2017, Drillisch AG took over 100% of 1 & 1 Telecommunication SE, in return United Internet took over the majority in Drillisch AG. On January 17, 2018, Drillisch AG was renamed 1 & 1 Drillisch AG.

Takeover of ProfitBricks

In November 2010 United Internet acquired a 30 percent stake in the Berlin IaaS provider ProfitBricks. Then ProfitBricks was run as a service provider for cloud hosting within the group of companies. On August 2017, ProfitBricks became a 100% subsidiary of United Internet.

Renaming to 1 & 1 Ionos

In October 2018 the hosting business with the IaaS provider ProfitBricks was renamed to 1 & 1 Ionos , as was 1 & 1 Internet SE to 1 & 1 Ionos SE . The 1 & 1 Ionos brand stands for web hosting and cloud computing. The business of ProfitBricks , IaaS cloud computing for businesses is, as 1 & 1 Ionos Enterprise Cloud continued. The brand has now been re-branded on Ionos by 1 & 1.

Locations

In addition to the headquarters in Montabaur, Ionos by 1 & 1 has branches in Germany in Berlin , Zweibrücken and Karlsruhe , the latter being the largest location in terms of employees.

The company began international expansion around the turn of the millennium. The participation in Afilias plays a role, which offers a prominent position in the introduction of the top-level domain .info , the first new gTLD since the introduction of .com in the 1980s. In the introductory phase of .info, 1 & 1 was able to unite around a quarter of all domain registrations under the new gTLD to its customers.

The company has had offices in Great Britain and France since 2000, and in the United States since 2003 . The company is also active in the markets in Italy , Austria , Spain , Canada , Mexico , Poland and the Philippines . In terms of sales, 1 & 1 Ionos Inc. , based in the Philadelphia (PA) area, is the most important foreign company of 1 & 1 Ionos. It operates its own data center in Lenexa , Kansas , in the USA .

Data centers

Ionos by 1 & 1 operates ten data centers in five countries for the 1 & 1 group, which are connected to the Internet at 360 Gbit / s via fiber optics. The data centers house 90,000 servers.

Products

In addition to shared hosting tariffs, the Ionos by 1 & 1 brand also offers dedicated, virtual and cloud servers as well as various e-mail solutions. In addition, 1 & 1 occurs on Ionos registrar of domain names, with the actual award by the sister company InterNetX or its US subsidiary PSI-USA Inc. takes place. In cooperation with the Hamburg provider Jimdo , a construction kit for websites called the Do-It-Yourself homepage was developed. At the end of 2009, Jimdo and the 1 & 1 parent company United Internet ended their collaboration. Since then, 1 & 1 has continued to develop the product independently under the name MyWebsite .

By merging with Profitbricks in October 2018, their Enterprise Cloud products came into the portfolio of Ionos by 1 & 1.
