history

The company was founded in February 2007 by Matthias Henze, Christian Springub and Fridtjof Detzner.

In 2008 United Internet AG bought 30 percent of the shares in Jimdo GmbH, and the cooperation ended in 2009 after a share buyback . In 2010 Jimdo added the "Store" function, which made it possible for owners of a Jimdo website to set up an online shop . In September 2011 Jimdo entered into a cooperation with the telecommunications provider KDDI in Japan.

In addition to the Jimdo headquarters in Hamburg, there is another office in Tokyo , Japan . Since 2011 Jimdo has also had an office in San Francisco , USA.

The 5,000,000th Jimdo website went online in February 2012, and the 10,000,000th in November 2013. On February 3, 2014, Jimdo released a blog app that can also be used to blog from mobile devices on a Jimdo website.

In June 2015 it was announced that the American company Spectrum Equity has invested 25 million euros in Jimdo. The investor thus secured 26.7 percent of the company. For Jimdo this is the second time that risk capital has been raised in the financial market. At this point in time, 15,000,000 websites have already been created with Jimdo. At the end of July 2015, the website was modernized. In 2015, 200 people from 15 countries worked for the company.

In October 2016, the company had to lay off 66 of its 258 employees for economic reasons. The two co-founders Fridtjof Detzner and Christian Springub took a break and withdrew from active day-to-day business.

In the 2016 financial year, Jimdo achieved sales of 29.4 million euros.

In February 2017, the number of employees in the Jimdo offices in Hamburg, San Francisco and Tokyo was only 170. In 2017, Jimdo started an entrepreneurial competition to promote young talent. In the 2018 financial year, Jimdo achieved sales of 39.1 million euros, an increase of 9.4 percent compared to the previous year. In December 2018 the company had 196 employees.

In October 2019, the company renewed its branding . For this purpose, a new logo and new recurring company symbols were introduced as part of the corporate identity .

In November 2019, Jimdo deleted a reporting portal set up by several AfD members of the Bundestag with the name "Dropout program for mainstream journalists" from its servers. According to the company, this AfD website “violates our guidelines and our values”. On this platform, which was only online for one day, "anti-democratic action" was called, the company continued.

The web construction kit can only be used on Jimdo's servers. The basic version with 500 MB storage space called PLAY, in which users can only register a subdomain under .jimdofree.com , is free of charge, but does not include e-mail functions or the possibility of additional domains. Furthermore, several paid web hosting packages are included.

Jimdo also offers sales platforms (online shops) that can be rented in three size categories. A previously offered free online shop has not been provided since 2019.

Jimdo Dolphin was introduced in October 2017 . Dolphin is supposed to be faster and easier to use. The connection to social media is further simplified. A shop function as well as the migration of older homepages from the Jimdo Creator is not possible.

The software currently supports six languages ​​(as of November 2019).

Since the beginning of February 2014, the Jimdo web construction kit has also been offered as an app for Android and Apple iOS under this name , but not all editing functions are available to the user of the app and it is therefore only suitable for brief changes or improvements.

Since 2019, Jimdo has also been offering search engine optimization and logo design services .
