The Afilias Limited is an Irish ISP based in Dublin . The company was founded in September 2000 and acts as the central registry for .info and other top-level domains as well as the operator of DNS services .

history

Afilias was launched in 2000 as a joint venture between several registrars . The purpose was to apply to ICANN for the introduction of the new generic address .info , which was later actually given to Afilias. Due to the great demand for .info domains, which can be registered since mid-2001, Afilias rose to become one of the largest registrars in a short time. Three years after its introduction, .info was already one of the six most successful domains.

In 2006 Afilias started operating the top-level domain .aero . The company does not act directly as a registration office, but provides the technical infrastructure in the background. Together with the web host GoDaddy , Afilias also applied for .us a year later , but could not prevail against NeuStar .

The takeover of the mTLD Top-Level Domain Ltd. received a lot of attention . in February 2010. The company was responsible for the allocation of .mobi and had to contend with falling demand for domains with this extension. Experts were largely critical of the acquisition: There were doubts that Afilias could reverse the trend away from .mobi.

In 2012, Afilias announced the purchase of RegistryPro , which operates the .pro domain . The company was previously owned by Hostway Corporation , and the parties did not provide any information about the purchase price. At that time, Afilias said it was directly or indirectly involved in the operation of 17 top-level domains.

The contract with ICANN for the operation of .info expired at the end of 2012. It was extended at short notice by six months until a new agreement could be concluded. The new contract, which was published in June 2013, allowed Afilias to sell domains itself for the first time, without going through an accredited registrar.

.info is the fifth most frequently registered domain extension with around 6.7 million domains.

Afilias' products and services are divided into two areas:

  • Global Registry Services : This business unit encompasses all activities related to the operation and administration of TLDs.
  • Managed DNS Service : This summarizes the provision of highly available and secure DNS services .

In the course of the introduction of new top-level domains in 2013, Afilias applied for more than 30 endings.
