A first IPO planned for 2006 was not carried out. Although GoDaddy has traditionally only acted as a registrar , the company applied as a registry for .us in 2007 . The joint venture with Afilias could not prevail in 2007 against NeuStar .

In 2010 GoDaddy managed almost 40 million domains , making it the world's largest registrar, ahead of Enom and Tucows . The total of registered addresses was put at 55 million in March 2013, so that GoDaddy manages more than the nine other large registrars combined. 50,000 domains are added every day, and GoDaddy had a total of eleven million customers by then.

In July 2011 GoDaddy was taken over by a consortium consisting of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Silver Lake . The owners KKR and Silver Lake floated the company in 2015.

In December 2016 GoDaddy published a press release in which they announced that they would buy the Host Europe group for 1.69 billion euros. The takeover was completed on April 3, 2017.

criticism

In December 2011, Jimmy Wales announced on Twitter that the domain names registered with GoDaddy from Wikimedia and “several hundred” domains from Wikia would be transferred to another registrar in protest of its stance on the Stop Online Piracy Act .
