The Host Europe Group Ltd. based in Hayes (England) is a hosting provider that has been part of the GoDaddy Group since April 2017 .

Company description

Host Europe Group (HEG) was founded in 1997, but in the first few years it operated several times under a different name (e.g. Host Europe WVS Limited) and, according to its own information, is Europe's largest privately owned hosting provider. It manages over 5 million registered domains and offers more than one million customers domain registrations, web hosting packages, managed hosting and cloud hosting solutions as well as a selection of software-as-a-service solutions.

With the brands 123-reg, Webfusion, Heart Internet, BrandFortress, Host Europe, Domainbox, Domainmonster, Domainfactory, DonHost, Sign-Up.to, velia.net and RedCoruna, the Host Europe Group is present on the markets of Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Romania and Spain present. Host Europe operates two carrier-neutral data centers with a capacity for around 24,000 servers at different locations in Cologne and one data center in Strasbourg. According to its own information, the customer base of the German subsidiary includes over 200,000 business and private customers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Company history

The founders of the company, which was originally called One-2-One GmbH , were Mike Behrendt and Uwe Braun. Mike Behrendt was the sole managing director of the company until it was sold to Host Europe plc in 2001 . In 2001, Patrick Pulvermüller joined Host Europe GmbH as sales manager and authorized signatory. From 2004, he was the second managing director alongside Uwe Braun, in charge of operations, product development and product management at Host Europe GmbH. After Uwe Braun left the company (2010), Patrick Pulvermüller became operational director.

Until 2008, Host Europe GmbH was a subsidiary of PIPEX Communications plc, a public limited company listed on the AIM . After the PIPEX group was broken up, Host Europe GmbH was merged with three other former PIPEX subsidiaries to form Host Europe WVS Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oakley Capital. On September 15, 2010, Oakley Capital announced the resale of Host Europe WVS Limited to Montagu Private Equity after a 2-year holding period at almost double the acquisition price of EUR 265 million. In 2013 the Host Europe Group was sold to the holding company Cinven for 509 million euros .

With the purchase of Telefónica Online Services, the hosting subsidiary of Telefónica Germany, in September 2013, Host Europe expanded its portfolio to include additional portal services that are sold under the brand name Host Europe Solutions . Targeted acquisitions were intended to further expand Host Europe's market position in Germany, and so at the end of October 2013 the web hosting company domainfactory GmbH was purchased. In August 2014 the group of companies was expanded to include Sign-Up.to, which specializes in online marketing (email, SMS & social marketing). Most recently, in December 2014, the server provider Intergenia with the associated brands Server4you, Plusserver , Serverloft, Unmetered.com and Internet24.de was acquired.

The datadock in Strasbourg

In October 2015, Host Europe announced that it would move all dedicated and virtual servers that were previously hosted in a data center in Cologne to a data center in Strasbourg at the end of 2015. Shared hosting products are to remain in Cologne, with all hosted products from the Group subsidiary Domainfactory to follow in 2016. This led to widespread criticism on the part of customers, as many customers have data protection concerns about a server location outside Germany.

In December 2016, GoDaddy published a press release in which they announced that they would buy the Host Europe Group for 1.69 billion euros. With the completion of the sale in April 2017, GoDaddy intends to integrate the Host Europe Group brand as GoDaddy EMEA .
