history

founding

In 1998 University of Chicago graduates Lucas Roh, John Lee, Arnold Choi, along with two other business partners, acquired Spectronet Inc., a web hosting company with annual sales of US $ 30,000. They renamed the company Hostway Corporation and immediately began preparing for expansion in the US and international markets. Previously, Roh worked as a computer scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. There he conducted research in the newly emerging field of "automatic differentiation" (see: Automatic differentiation ). He also spent six years as a software and hardware developer at Tektronics and Hewlett-Packard. Roh's background in technology and business interests led him to become the founder, president and CEO of Hostway Corporation.

globalization

After expanding the customer base in the Chicago metropolitan area and across the United States, the company formed Hostway Korea. This has proven to be an ideal start for Hostways expansion, especially as Roh grew up in South Korea before his family immigrated to the US during high school. As a result, he was already familiar with the local business culture and its processes. That beginning was the starting point for the widespread globalization of Hostway's web hosting services.

Hostway has always remained in private hands during the expansion. Data centers and offices were opened in North America (Chicago, Tampa, Austin, Vancouver), Europe (United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany), as well as in Australia, India and Korea. Hostway has been profitable since it was founded. It is worth noting that during the expansion of operations in global markets, external equity capital was never drawn.

Acquisitions

Since 2000, Hostway has carried out a number of mergers and acquisitions in the first half of the decade to expand its customer base and further develop its market strength in the areas of dedicated servers , managed hosting and domain registration. The most important merger was in 2003 with the Canadian publicly traded NetNation Communications (Nasdaq: NNCI), in which US $ 10 million in cash were paid out to the shareholders of NetNation.

In April 2005, Germany merged with Server-Service GmbH, headquartered in Hanover, a leading German Internet provider specializing in the areas of colocation , dedicated servers and managed hosting, as well as domain and hosting solutions for resellers . Server-Service GmbH was founded in 1999 by Cord Bansemer and Achilleas Anastasiadis as the successor to Anastasiadis & Bansemer GbR, which has been operating on the Internet since 1997 and which had previously operated under the brand name Server-Service. In this way, Hostway in Germany was able to rely on the experience of one of the country's oldest Internet providers. In November 2007, Server-Service GmbH was renamed Hostway Deutschland GmbH, after having operated as Server-Service AG between December 2005 and November 2007.

In June 2006, Hostway announced the opening of its new data center at Boeing International's global headquarters in the heart of downtown Chicago. It is the largest commercially operated data center in downtown Chicago.

In April 2007, Hostway announced the acquisition of Affinity Internet Inc. Affinity Internet was headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, employed approximately 300 people, and was founded in 1996.

Divestments

In May 2009, Hostway sold the data center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA) including colocation customers to Host.net.

financing

In March 2010, Hostway said it received $ 110 million in funding from a consortium of investors to fund its ongoing growth strategy.
