.mobi is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) operated by dotMobi Ltd. is operated. It has existed since October 17, 2005 and is primarily intended for the provision of websites that are specially optimized for mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets .

history

As part of the so-called sunrise period until September 22, 2006, owners of a registered trademark were able to reserve the .mobi domains that were protected for them. Then just four days later the so-called landrush began , which enables anyone to register an address. The four-day period between Sunrise and Landrush Period was criticized by experts as being extremely short, as it left little room for potential disputes.

In February 2007, the registry dotMobi announced that it would build a web catalog from the previously registered .mobi domains . This should help users to find websites specially optimized for their end device and protect them from phishing and other fraudulent content. In addition, dotMobi has entered into a partnership with numerous telecommunications companies , within the framework of which .mobi was increasingly used and advertised on end devices. In addition to Telefónica , the partners also included Deutsche Telekom with its then T-Mobile brand .

In spring 2010 the registry dotMobi was taken over by the Irish company Afilias , which had already provided the technical infrastructure for the operation of .mobi. The founding members of dotMobi - including Google , Vodafone , Microsoft and Nokia - have announced that they will continue to support the top-level domain.

properties

A .mobi domain can be between three and 63 characters long and only consist of alphanumeric characters . The use of internationalized domain names is not yet possible. New addresses can be registered by any natural or legal person ; there are no particular restrictions on the assignment. In particular, it is not necessary to prove that, under a .mobi domain, only pages specially optimized for mobile devices are made available, even if the registration office instructs the owner to do so.

meaning

The importance of .mobi has declined significantly in recent years, with trading on platforms such as Sedo in particular declining. The main reason for this is that modern smartphones are no longer dependent on specially optimized websites, but can also display normal content. There is practically no longer any clear distinction between .mobi and other top-level domains.
