.mil is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) that was introduced on January 1, 1985 , making it one of the oldest extensions of all. It is assigned to the so-called Network Information Center of the United States Department of Defense , which has its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio .

The use of the domain is reserved for the armed forces of the United States only, domains under .mil cannot be requested by third parties or companies. The address norad.mil , which is operated jointly by the USA and Canada , is a special case , as both countries jointly operate the North American Air and Space Defense Command .
