Jay Haas (born December 2, 1953 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American professional golfer on the Champions Tour .

Career

After attending Wake Forest University , he became a professional golfer in 1976 and had a solid career with nine tournament wins on the PGA TOUR between 1978 and 1993.

In the 2003 season, Haas experienced a kind of rebirth, placed in the top 30 of the money list for the first time since 1995, was considered in the US team of the Presidents Cup and was called up to the Ryder Cup team for 2004 by Captain Hal Sutton .

As of 2004, Haas was eligible to play for the Champions Tour and missed his first senior major by just one stroke against Hale Irwin . The following year he won two tournaments there, but continued to play on the PGA TOUR . In April 2006 Haas managed to win two tournaments in a row on the senior tour and in May he won his first senior major , the Senior PGA Championship , in the jump-off against Brad Bryant . In both 2006 and 2007, Haas won the annual Champions Tour and the Arnold Palmer Award . In 2008 he won the Charles Schwab Cup , the equivalent of the FedEx Cup for seniors.

Jay Haas is the nephew of the 1968 Masters winner, Bob Goalby , and his second oldest son, Bill , has played on the PGA TOUR since 2006 . He is based in Greenville , South Carolina .
