Presidents Cup
The Presidents Cup is a biennial team competition for golf professionals, which is based on the model of the Ryder Cup every two years between golfers from the USA and those from the "rest of the world" (with the exception of Europe).
history
Founded on the initiative of the US PGA Tour , the competition was first held in 1994 and was named Presidents Cup in honor of the former US President Gerald Ford , who had taken over the patronage . In 1994 and 1996 the event took place in the USA, since 1998 the venue has changed between the USA and a place elsewhere in the world. Since the Ryder Cup 2001 was not held and was postponed to the following year, the Presidents Cup has taken place in years with an odd number, at the same time as the Seve Trophy .
In 2017, Donald Trump was the first incumbent US president to present the trophy to the winning team.
format
As in the Ryder Cup, the teams consist of 12 players each and a non-playing captain , who is responsible for the line-up variants. In contrast to the Ryder Cup, the competition has been over 4 days since 2003 and all 12 players of each team are in action in 6 double encounters ( foursomes and fourballs ) on the 1st and 2nd day. On the 3rd day, one player will miss out on each of the 5 double encounters per team. The last day is like the Ryder Cup again. i.e. there are 12 individual games. So a total of 34 points / matches are played, while there are only 28 in the Ryder Cup. Another important difference is that - as long as the cup winner has not been determined - the individual matches are played through a jump-off until a winner has been determined.
Since 2015 only 30 matches have been played - on the 2nd day 5 doubles each, on the 3rd day 4 double encounters in both formats are played.
